Part of the attraction of Southern California is that it is home to so many varied communities. The adjoining communities of Cerritos and Artesia, which are part of the “Gateway Cities” of southeast Los Angeles County, are one example of that in between, where residents can enjoy a suburban lifestyle within easy reach of the major metropolitan centers of Los Angeles and Orange County.

Cerritos and Artesia: Nested Communities

Artesia, the smaller of the two cities with a population of 16,578, is surrounded on three sides by larger Cerritos, which is home to 50,143. The village of Artesia was first established in 1875 and named for the many artesian wells in the area. In the 1920s and ’30s, the area became one of the most important dairy districts in southern California, owing to the wells that made it ideal for agriculture. Artesia was formally incorporated in 1959.

First incorporated as the City of Dairy Valley in 1956, Cerritos was renamed in 1967 as the area became more residential in character. Although the name “cerritos,” meaning “little hills” in Spanish, dates back to the original land grant owner in the days of Spanish exploration, the modern city boasts no natural hills. The area does, however, enjoy access to many major freeways, including the 91, the 605, and the 5, giving residents easy routes to most major Southern California destinations.

Why Live in Cerritos or Artesia?

As one of the first cities in Los Angeles County to create large-scale retail zones, such as Los Cerritos Center and Cerritos Auto Square, Cerritos reinvested the resulting revenue into public works projects and community services. The city has 28 parks and recreation facilities, including the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, the Cerritos Millennium Library, the Cerritos Sculpture Garden, and Heritage Park.

Located on the MetroRail blue line, which connects to downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, and Long Beach, the city attracts young professionals. Among local attractions are the East West Ice Palace, co-owned by former Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan, the Artesia Historical Museum, and the International Cultural District (also colloquially known as Little India in honor of the city’s strong Indian community), which features unique stores with multicultural offerings.

The communities share a unique “semi-marine” climate, even though they are inland. While Cerritos and Artesia rarely experience the fog common along the beaches, the area benefits from the cooling effect of the San Gabriel River breezes, sparing them the smog, heat, and Santa Ana winds regularly experienced elsewhere in the Los Angeles Basin. Both are also known for excellent public schools and a diverse community. Whitney High School, located in Cerritos, is routinely ranked as one of the top ten in California and the top 30 in the nation.

Family Homes in Demand

Like the rest of Southern California, Artesia and Cerritos are seeing rising home prices, with available homes quickly purchased. As of September 2021, the median sales price for a home in Artesia was $635K, and Cerritos homes sold for a median price of $950K. Most homes in these cities are three- and four-bedroom detached single-family houses, perfect for growing families looking for a community relatively close to major business hubs in the Southern California area. Compared to Cerritos, many of the homes in Artesia are older, having been constructed in the post-World War II boom. By contrast, a larger proportion of Cerritos’s houses were built in the last three decades of the 20th century.
